Major Repair

On Sunday my Scag lawn mower had one of the hydro motors seize up. It was a catastrophic failure, with it sending metal shavings throughout the hydraulic system. When this happens you basically need to change the hydro pumps and wheel motors on both sides. The shavings from the bad pump will score the tight tolerance parts in the wheel motor next to it at the very least, but also likely on the other side as well. I bought $3200 in parts and started tearing it down today. This is a big job and expensive. I need to get it back cutting as soon as possible. I will try to get some video footage of it tomorrow, if any of you are interested. I'd rather be talking guns, but this is the cards that got dealt to me this week. The hydraulic pumps are hydro gear, and the wheel motors are Parker. I can't risk buying unknown quality Chicom parts, so I bought OEM. I have the new pumps, and the wheel motors are supposed to arrive tomorrow.

I do a lot of mechanics work, but this is the first time I have done this job. It is actually a pretty hard job. It is messy, kind of confusing, with a bunch of hydro lines (return and pressure, running all over and around the engine, cooler, fluid tank, from one side to the other), and also a good bit of grunt work. I did overcome removing the wheel hub off of the tapered shaft of the wheel motor. I used a big 3 jaw puller, lots of heat with proper striking with a brass hammer while under tension. When it finally came free the hub with puller attached launched back at me 3 feet. ,LOL I didn't get hurt, but 25 pounds of hot metal landing in your lap spices things up. I also overcame the super seized hydro pump pulley. It is the classic 2 piece pulley with a keyway and 2 bolts that connect the inner split collar to the main pulley. You unscrew the 2, 1/4-20 bolts that fasten the 2, then use the threaded holes in the center piece to press against the face of the pulley. Its hard to describe, but if you know what I mean, then you know.... LOL 3rd pic shows the 2 piece tapered pulley Note that this mower is 15 years old and these parts have never been removed before. With some skill and a little luck, and a lot of heat, and brass hammer pounding I was able to get it apart and off of the old hydro pump shaft. This is especially tricky, because 1/4" diameter bolts are not very strong, but that is how it was made. There are a ton of YouTube videos showing people shearing the bolts off trying to press the pieces apart. The key is, hand ratchet only, no impact! Equally tightening both bolts evenly. Applying heat around the tapered press fit area. Wait until you hear a little "tink" or crack noise. Then tighten both bolts again, then heat more until you hear the noise, then tighten again. Also gently tapping the heads of the press bolts, and the outside of the inner collar with a brass hammer. repeating everything I said many times as it slowly creaks out one blonde hair at a time. PB blaster is also in the mix. I don't think it really does a whole lot, but the plume of smoke when the metal gets hot gives moral support, and makes you really feel like you are getting somewhere.

Instead of typing for another hour, I will try to get some video footage of the other side. Let me know if any of you are interested in that.

I hope you are all doing good, and I look forward to hanging out here again soon.

I feel safe now there is a sign !!!

I have watched a lot of YT dealing with gun reviews. Almost all of them, new pews or existing pews, when reviewed there is a red dot or the trigger was replaced or has a light in it.

If you are going to review a new or existing pew, don’t make any modifications on it. Just straight out if the box

My opinion
